Church History

CHURCH HISTORY

The history of our St. Roch church has started from the year 1915. It was known through elderly people that, a small cottage is used for prayer towards St. Roch using a small idol of St. Roch from the year 1915 0nwards. At this time our church was under the parish of Kurusady. Later our church has been brought under the parish of Rajavoor and after that and still under the parish of Ramanathichanputhoor (North)
This small idol of St. Roch, can be still seen in our church.
Later, being realized about the gracefulness of our St. Roch
towards our illness and diseases, it was decided and the prayer house was converted into a church by Fr. Ignatius in the year 1943 and was in use for years. Still our elder people cherish in the beautiful moments they were in part of this church and church activities and the first mass conducted by Fr. Benzigar, our church was under Kollam diocese at that time.
In the later stage our St. Roch church extension work was done by Fr. Thomas Fernandez in the year 1976.
As years pass-by blessings from our St. Roch also was in abundant and our village got developed. Later in a stage, it was decided to build a beautiful church for our beloved St. Roch by our parish priest Late   Rev. Fr. A. Amalraj.
The new church building work started in the year 1995. Being with abundant love towards St. Roch, almost all the people in our village, from small child to the most elderly people, raised their hands in the
development of the new church; either by funds or through the manual help in construction.
The new church for St. Roch grew in a medium pace and with a beautiful phase. Finally after a couple of years, the construction work got completed and was blessed and opened by our Bishop, Late          Rev Fr. Leon A Dharmaraj, on 8th August 1997, in the presence of our parish priest Late Rev. Fr. A. Amalraj.
Anyone who gets a chance to have a glance of our church never left the place without leaving an astonishing comment. Such a beautiful design it was and it was the talk of the town for a few months.
Our people’s love towards our Paathukavalar, never will decrease but rather will increase day by day and as a result, they were not ready to leave the church as it is and as a further development, a KEBI along with a big stage was decided to be built. The work for this KEBI along with stage started on   3rd July 2000.
The KEBI and stage were opened on 24th June 2005, by Rev. Fr. Jokim in the presence of Rev. Fr. Joseph Colin.
During festival days our St. Roch church shines in bright and decorative lights. There was a problem during these days as the power supplies required on these days are in abundant and hence the expense got big concern. Hence our village people decided to get a high voltage generator for our church and the same was bought and in use from  18th August 2013.
Our church and related activities are getting developed day by day and similarly the blessings we get from our Paathukavalar St. Roch is also getting increased day by day. He as a savior protects our people from any form of disasters.
Let’s do pray towards our St. Roch regularly.

LIFE OF A ST.ROCHE

                    LIFE OF A ST.ROCHE

St. Roch was born at Montpellier, at that time "upon the border of France" as Legenda Aurea has it, the son of the noble governor of that city. Even his birth was accounted a miracle, for his noble mother had been barren until she prayed to the Virgin Mary. Miraculously marked from birth with a red cross on his breast that grew as he did, he early began to manifest strict asceticism and great devoutness; on days when his "devout mother fasted twice in the week, and the blessed child Rocke abstained him twice also, when his mother fasted in the week, and would suck his mother but once that day".

On the death of his parents in his twentieth year he distributed all his worldly goods among the poor like Francis of Assisi though his father on his deathbed had ordained him governor of Montpellier and set out as a mendicant pilgrim for Rome. Coming into Italy during an epidemic of plague, he was very diligent in tending the sick in the public hospitals at Acquapendente, Cesena, Rimini, Novara and Rome, and is said to have effected many miraculous cures by prayer and the sign of the cross and the touch of his hand. At Rome, according to Legenda Aurea he preserved the "cardinal of Angleria in Lombardy" by making the mark of the cross on his forehead, which miraculously remained. Ministering at Piacenza he himself finally fell ill. He was expelled from the town; and withdrew into the forest, where he made himself a hut of boughs and leaves, which was miraculously supplied with water by a spring that arose in the place; he would have perished had not a dog belonging to a nobleman named Gothard Palastrelli supplied him with bread and licked his wounds, healing them. Count Gothard, following his hunting dog that carried the bread, discovered Saint Roch and became his acolyte.

On his return incognito to Montpellier he was arrested as a spy (by orders of his own uncle) and thrown into prison, where he languished five years and died on 16 August 1327, without revealing his name, to avoid worldly glory. (Evidence suggests, as mentioned earlier, that the previous events occurred, instead at Voghera in 1370s.) After his death, according to Legenda Aurea,
"anon an angel brought from heaven a table divinely written with letters of gold into the prison, which he laid under the head of S. Rocke. And in that table was written that God had granted to him his prayer, that is to
wit, that who that calleth meekly to S. Rocke he shall not be hurt with any hurt of pestilence."

The townspeople recognized him as well by his birthmark; he was soon canonized in the popular mind, and a great church erected in veneration.

PRAYER OF ST.ROCHE

PRAYER OF ST.ROCHE

Lord God,
you teach us that the commandments of heaven
are summarized in love of you and love of our neighbor.
By following the example of Saint Roch
in practicing works of charity may we be counted
among the blessed in your kingdom.
Grant this through our lord Jesus Christ,
your Son who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit one God, forever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR SUFFERED

PRAYER FOR SUFFERED

Dear mendicant pilgrim,
you once took care of sufferers from the plague
and were always ready to help other by kind service and fervent prayers.
You yourself had no home and you died in a dungeon,
No wonder countless invalids have confidently invoked your help.
Please grant a cure to... (Name of the sufferer),
and help us all become spiritually healthy. Amen.

NOVENA IN HONOUR OF ST.ROCH

     NOVENA IN HONOUR OF ST.ROCH

O Blessed Saint Roch,
Patron of the sick,
Have pity on those
Who lie upon a bed of suffering.
Your power was so great
When you were in this world,
That by the sign of the Cross,
Many were healed of their diseases.
Now that you are in heaven,
Your power is not less.
Offer, then, to God
Our sighs and tears
And obtain for us that health we seek
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Saint Roch, Pray for us,
That we may be preserved
From all diseases of body and soul. (Three times)
